«Hey Vagabond, how are you» was a message I found early in the morning in my WhatsApp. It kind of threw me off for a bit to be called a «Vagabond»! A Vagabond does not have a home, I do. This message, received from a friend of mine in Germany got me thinking about the meaning «home.»
First and foremost: I don’t feel like a Vagabond as I feel home anywhere I go.
However, home has a different meaning for different people. Some only feel home where they grew up, went to school or work. I asked multiple people about their definition of «home», and received a different answer from each of them.
Please allow me to define the meaning of home for me: I am home on this planet and if you are honest, you will agree that our Planet Earth is, by far, the most awesome place in the universe as we know it. I have not seen any inviting images from other planets. They are mostly desolate, have no beaches, mountains, or coconut trees. I am home on Earth, enjoying the many different and exciting places it has to offer.
I also have the tendency to «make a home» when traveling. When I go camping, I travel with my trailer which is my home on wheels. When I travel and stay at a hotel, I am rearranging the room to a point that I feel at home. Recently I visited the impressive City of Cairo in Egypt. After a 20-hour flight I arrived at my hotel which was located right at the banks of the Nile River. The room offered huge floor-to-ceiling windows with 2 comfortable chairs facing the room. That bothered me tremendously. Why would I want to sit in a chair looking at my hotel room? I turned both chairs around, added a small coffee table I found in another part of the room and sat down looking at the Nile. Now that is a sight you do not get to enjoy every day. This simple re-arrangement of furniture gave me a more «homey» feeling, and I spent mornings in my chair watching the wheelin’ & dealin’ on and along the Nile River while enjoying a cup of coffee.
Everybody has a different take on home, my home is this planet … the question about me being a Vagabond or not is a whole other story …
